The 4th Japan Open Tango Dance Championship Regulations

General Information
(1)

1)On November 16 of 2008, the Japan World Tango Festival Steering Committee will hold The 4th Japan Open Tango Dance Championship at
Bunkyo Civic Hall

(2)

TOKYO MX TV and the Argentine Tango dance Association in Japan are the organizers of the Festival

(3)

The preparatives of the events are responsbility of the Japan World tango festival comitee

(4) The embassy of Argentina in Japan, The embassy of Uruguay in Japan, The embassy of Colombia in Japan and the SADAIC of Argentina support the Festival.

Japan open Tango championships has two categories: SALON category and STAGE category

(6)

Japan open Tango championships have monetary refunds and trophies for the first, second third and fourth places. The total amount of the prizes is of 3.000.000 yens (three million japanese yens) 28000 (twenty eight thousand u$s dolars aprox.)

(7)

The Argentine Tango dance association in Japan holds the right to monopolize all images of the participants.

A maintains the exclusive right to photograph and film all participants in any and all scenes of "Japan World Tango Festival and their use for promotion, advertisement and publication. Has no obligation to compensate the participants for any of the above activities.


Entry Qualifications
 

We welcome any male-female couple over 16 years old to enter the competition, regardless of country of citizenship .


Entry Application
  The entry fee for the first Japan Open Tango Dance Championship is ten thousand yen per couple per category(90u$s dolars aprox.).

To apply for entry to Japan Open Tango Dance Championship , fill out the application form provided by the Steering Committee, deliver it through post, fax, or email, and then transfer the entry fee to the bank account. The Competition
1.

Both categories are comprised of three stages:Qualifying Round: All competitors will participate in the Qualifying Round. One round will occur over the course of one day.

(The Salon Category includes 3 tangos in one round. The Stage Category includes 1 tango in one round).

The Semi-final Round: Couples who have been selected in the Qualifying Round will appear in this one-day single round.

(The Salon Category includes 3 tangos, one time. The Stage Category will include 1 tango, one time).

The Final Competition: Couples selected in the Semi-Final Round will appear in this single-round, one-day competition.

(The Salon Category includes 3 tangos, one time. The Stage Category includes 1 tango, one time)

In the Salon Category, competitors performing at each stage in the competition will dance three tangos to recordings selected by the Steering Committee, or to live music.

3)

)In the Stage Category, competitors will prepare one ore two tangos on their own, and will deliver the music prior to the competition in CD format. In the Qualifying Round, the Semi-Final Round and the Final Round, the competitors can dance the same or different tango as they wish . Couples can use the same music and the same choreography in Qualifying, the semi-final and final rounds.


The Judging Panel
1) Judges chosen from each participating country will form the International Judges' Panel.
2) The judges' vote will occur only once, and requests to change the vote will not be tolerated. It is assumed that competitors have accepted these regulations starting at the time of application.
3) Anyone who has a question about or objection to a decision made by the judges may not approach the judges directly, but may present the case in writing (Japanese, English, or Spanish only, please) to the Japan World Tango World Festival Steering Committee.
4) In the Qualifying Round, judges will select competitors to move on into the Semi-Final Round in yes/no format. In the Semi-Final Round, the competitors will be judged on a ten-point scale. After each couple has finished their tangos, the judge's name will appear with the score he has awarded the couple, and the finalists will be chosen by the total points. The final round will have the same format, and judges will pick a first, second, and third place couple.
5) In the event of a tie, or if the judges determine the need, the competitors may be required to dance again. Competitors can not refuse to dance.
6)

Punctuation system,From the 7 judges, the highest point and the lowest point are erased. The results are finally decided from the punctuation of 5 judges remain


Judgment Criteria
The Salon Category
1) Once the couple has joined together, they must maintain contact until the music stops.
2) The couples must maintain the "abrazo" with each other's bodies at all times.
3) All of the movements must be executed within the space of the "abrazo" that the couple has shaped.
4) Judges will consider style and elegance as evaluation criteria.
5) Abiding by the above, dancers may execute commonly used figures such as barrida, sacada, and enrosque etc..
6) The couple can not use leaping, lifting, or gymnastic techniques of any form.
7) Couples must move in the counter-clockwise direction. Couples may not dance in the same place for more than three bars of music.
8) Steps where the feet goes over the knees height are not permitted

The Stage Category
1)

Each competitor may freely express his ideas about the dance of tango. Steps, figures and techniques unrelated to traditional tango are permitted.

2) If it is valid and necessary for the performance or choreography, dancers may break the "abrazo" to do other techniques.
3) Regarding the previous points, dancers can not use tango music to perform other styles of dance that do not preserve the essence of tango.

The judges will consider the following:
Dance choreography (creativity), preservation of tango's essence, use of the stage space, dance technique, body expression, body posture, couple synchronization, expression of the music and accuracy in doing so, costume and make-up.

The participants in the Stage Category must send toghether with the music confirmation sheet the two songs they will use in the competition in CD format (only).

The songs must not exceed 4 minutes long (A. Waltz is not permitted)

In the clasification round two songs are danced, in the semifinal and final round only one song is danced. You can use the same song with the same choreography.

Awards
1)

In the 4th Japan Open Tango Dance Championship , one couple in each category will be determined champion.

2) The winning couple in each category will be awarded in  japanese yens, a trophy and will be televised exclusively for TOKYO MX TV.
3)

The second place couple in each category will be awarded in japanese yens.

4) The third place couple in each category will be awarded in japanese yens.
5) The Fourth place couple in each category will be awarded in japanese yens.

6)

 

All the Japan Open Tango Dance Championship participants are invited to the Grand Opening Milonga.

The total amount of the prizes is of 3.000.000 Yens (28.000 thousand u$s dolars aprox.)

7)
  The finalists in both categories of the First Japan open tango championships and the guests specially invited for the festival will not have to participate in the qualification round, starting directly from the semifinal round.
